First, those plastic storage boxes wouldn't stack straight. Once you put two layers together, they wobbled. A slight bump and they'd tip over. He was getting bad reviews and higher return rates.
Second, the base had poor moisture protection. Parts of Australia can get pretty humid, especially near the coast. When customers put the cabinets directly on the floor, stuff inside would get moldy over time. He'd heard complaints more than once.
He asked us: could we make a custom plastic storage cabinet that stacks solid, stays off the floor, and still costs reasonable?
We looked at his sample photos and asked about size and weight requirements. He didn't need anything huge. About 60cm wide, three to five tiers, but the key was stability.
Our engineers came up with a simple fix:
Widened the base by 2cm on each side. That lowered the center of gravity when stacked.
Added taller feet – 3cm off the floor – for better airflow and less moisture.
Integrated snap-on positioning between layers. Each tier clicks into place, no sliding.
Small changes, but they solved both problems. We made a sample and sent it to him. He tested it and said the difference was obvious. Three tiers stacked, no wobble even when pushed.
He placed his first order – 2,000 units, half three-tier, half four-tier. We also helped with packaging: foldable design, 8 units per carton. His shipping cost dropped about 20%.
That was almost six months ago. The product – that plastic multi-layer storage cabinet – has been selling steadily, with good feedback. He recently reordered and added a five-tier version.
His words stuck with us: "You didn't overcomplicate simple things. You made the complicated stuff simple."
That's how we do custom work – not flashy, but effective.
